Early Booking vs Last Minute Discounts (which is best?)

Is it better to reserve early, or take advantage of last minute travel discounts? In this video I discuss the window of time that I think is best to AVOID booking hotels, flights etc., and when it’s a good idea to lock in your reservations to get the best deal.

  1. I just booked a flight maybe 4 weeks in advance. Then I tried to book it 4 days prior. The 4 days prior to the said date got me a faster flight but I would only save like $5. So I just need to be packed and ready to go. To get a better flight.

  2. When I lived back East, my girlfriend and I decided to go to Mardi Gras in New Orleans. We started calling hotels and everything was booked! I always wanted to stay at the Pontchartrain Hotel on St Charles Avenue so my girlfriend suggested just to give them a call and see if they had a room, which they did! It was actually cheaper than some of the hotels that we called that were more than a hour away from New Orleans. So I got my dream hotel!

  3. We learned that if you make a plane reservation far in advance, you need to call to make sure the flight time hasn't changed, like one used to have to do for an international flight.

  4. I like to book way ahead too. It’s fun to plan the trip, the restaurants, the activities. I like to think about my sinking fund…now we have 2 nights saved, or enough for all our meals, etc.

  5. That always happens to me. It's the week of or the night before… when I go, "Hey maybe we should do something…" But often it's quite pricey, esp, on the big holidays; Thanksgiving, Christmas-New Year combo, or 3-day holidays.

  6. You look great in this video Dana. Like a little slice of summer.😊 I’m hoping you are right in this video because we are headed somewhere and REALLY put off booking….I’ll let ya know! Have a great day!

  7. I’ve heard the 4/3 rule before, but I think it also depends a lot on where you’re going. For example, we’re planning to go to Yellowstone next summer and I’ve already booked as much as I can book because everything fills up earlier there than at other national parks. I did make sure to get refundable reservations though… a lot can happen in a year. Hope you have fun at Jellystone! Happy Independence Day! ❤️

  8. Hiya. I like to book 13/14 months ahead as i typically save money, have time to save up spending money , learn what the sights and cheap things to do are, learn a bit of the language etc and 13 months of looking forward to it! Kx
