Does Google use a third party to handle the booking? If so, making changes, after the first booking, might be difficult.
I always try to upgrade transcontinental flights from economy plus or premium economy to business, and I have never been offered an upgrade for less than an additional $1400 one way .
I disagree that prices are initially high because of business travel demands. Business travelers buy tickets 30-45 days in advance, at most. Flights are usually available 330 days out. I waited for the first price drop and snagged a couple of Delta One seats about 300 days in advance. The price for those seats is now more than double what I paid. If you see a good deal, take. Prices aren’t going down anytime soon. (This video was recorded before the current geopolitical situation.)
Best way is to book with miles and cancel when you get a great deal.
There are definitely smarter ways to book premium cabins than paying full fare. I've had better luck using Top Business Class to secure confirmed business seats instead of relying on upgrade tricks.
Old rates and tariffs agent here. Miss my crs. Don't forget to take advantage of stopover rules allowed and return fares. Also, free hotel packages at home base.

I got a mistake fair on delta website on a 11 hours flight business class for $150.50 was a glitch and I knew it I upgraded right away and it gave it to me.

Seats available days before the flight only means they have not been selected yet, not that they are up for sale.
Had free upgrades twice – premium economy to business LHR-HKG. BKK-HKG economy to business. Both airlines I had status and the flights were fully booked (or overbooked)
Thank you for the tips. I know you touched on credit cards at the end, but the rest was really refreshing. I don't use credit cards out of principle. To think I'm earning points on the back of someone else's misery doesn't sit right with me, so appreciate the other methods.
I would also say there are debit cards you can gain points on. Revolut is one I use.
Google flights is a PITA. You can look at the map and see multiple destinations, but you cannot consider multiple origins. Often times I find myself wanted to fly somewhere specific (BKK, Manila, Tokyo) and wanted to start "In North America" "In the EU" "In Central America". You can't do it. Grrrrrr
also, part of the pricing algorithm is HOW full the flight is: A flight that has more seats available closer to the departure will DROP in price, whereas a flight that is more full fill INCREASE in price. "detected" demand will also impact price. Searching a flight multiple times can cause price to INCREASE specifically for yourself.

Lufthansa didn't even budge at the gate for FRA-ORD to business class for 6 seats availability last time the opportunity was available.

In recent years, reservation computer progams seem to ensure that all the cabins on all the airlines always fly full. The days of upgrades are over.
With most airlines, if you book economy/premium economy they only show you the economy part of the cabin on the seating plan and most airlines make you buy your ticket before you pick your seat, so you can’t see how many seats are available in business class.

Google flights is utter crap – it was nearly $2,000 more than booking directly with the airlines. Use it for a reference and then go to the airline's individual site and compare.

I live in the Caribbean, and few to none of these tips work here. It's really expensive to travel from here, and often the business class seating is so limited, that you often find it completely sold out. AA BGI to MIA literally only has 16 Business class seats
The problem is very few people are flexible in their travel dates and locations. There are typically other dependencies and circumstances that make you fly in the first place. And when you have to fly, people don’t care economy or business. As long as it’s safe. So, this video is for a very select group of people.
