  1. this is a pretty good video. having used to work for the airlines i can tell PLEASE always book thru the airline. i lost track how many times when irregular ops happened, for whatever the reason, if someone had a ticket form Priceline, expedia, or anything besides directly form my airline we told them to get with the company you booked with and they will help. this was back in the 90s when airlines actually had csr's who where nice to people and we still dismissed anyone who did not book directly with us. i can only imagine how it is now when airlines hate the passengers and try to avoid talking to them.

also people keep saying use VPN for better fares. myself and a couple friends of mine have tried this over various VPN's and it never works. Changing a city like say instead of flying from Omaha you fly from Kansas City. or if you live in a hub city like Chicago check the price out of Milwaukee and you could save some money. i know where i live i have 4 airports within 4 hrs of me and if i book in any of those besides my hometown airport i save on avg $400 more than enough to cover the gas to and from the airport and even the airport parking. since i take the train to my hometown airport parking is free for me. and it is still cheaper to go to one of the other 4 airports, pay for parking and i still walk away with a 100-200 in my pocket. which sucks cause i would rather juts take the train tot he airport and not deal with traffic but i like to save money more than avoid traffic.. LOL

  2. Thanks as always for your insights. My biggest concern is getting the best seats (I NEED a window and I'm a bit tall for "regular" seats), and those can go fast, especially on long hauls, so we try to book at lest six months and sometimes more in advance. That's why we can't take advantage of "last-minute" front-of-plane upgrades–all of the good seats are gone. Another thing we do is avoid travel during holidays or high season (mainly because we're not fans of crowds or heat), and that can result in lower fares (and lodging), as well as a more pleasant travel experience. Early flights, especially from NA to EU, aren't necessarily an option (at least from DTW), as red-eyes rule, but for domestic, we always try to get the first flight out for the reasons you mention. EU to NA is a different story–we've got a 6:00am departure from Venice later this year, and that could be interesting getting from the Grand Canal to VCE at that hour (well, before that hour)… Any tips on that (it's supposedly doable)?

Of course, if you go large cabin bizjet (like @12:15), things get a bit more flexible (and ridiculously more expensive and carbon-intensive). Interesting tip on Nord–we've used their VPN for years and their Saily eSim app is great.

  3. I worked in rental car for a few years, and I'd tell people the same thing with rental cars: It's much better to book directly with the rental car company if possible, especially if the price difference isn't that significant. If something goes wrong with your reservation, it's very, very difficult to resolve if you booked with a third party.

  4. The best rate I got was in 2020 at the beginning of covid. I booked in late March for flights for mid August of 2020 (roundtrip) and was about half of what normal cheap flights.
The airline rescheduled some flights due to low passenger load which allowed me to free change of flight when I wanted to extend trip a few more days.
Hotels on the other hand got rid of free hot meals and substituted for unhealthy high carb meals (more junk food than meal). So had to spend some more for breakfast that was keto friendly.

  5. I am from Honolulu and would like to travel to Japan. I missed the window and now tickets are $200 more expensive even if it’s a shoulder season!

  6. So often booking directly through the airline is the price. I have found that it can be considerably cheaper to use a third party. Expedia has offered me some extraordinary support during a few times of crisis. When I do book directly with the airline itself, it is often a lower level regional carrier or if I am employing points/miles to pay for said flight.

  7. Question…if this applies….what about "cookies " on computer seeing that you are looking to travel. Do we see a rise in price as airline or 3rd party sites see you are looking to travel?

  8. I always book my flight the day the flight goes on sale at Delta and if price goes down ( rare ) I ask for ecredit for the difference , usually they rise within a month

  9. In 2019 I booked an economy RT ticket from Philadelphia to London directly with the airline. While in London, I had to change my return date. When I did that, I was offered an upgrade to a premium seat for an additional $40, only! What a seal of a deal! The seat next to me ended up being empty, so I really stretched out. Watched "Bohemian Rhapsody" twice on that flight.
